In the heart of Boston, where colonial history and cutting-edge innovation coexist, the Boston Public Library has created something truly special for entrepreneurs, creators, and business minds. The Kirstein Business Library & Innovation Center (KBLIC)
Enter through the original library building, and you’re treated to a breathtaking courtyard journey, complete with meticulously maintained hedge bushes, classical columns forming elegant arches, and a striking statue centerpiece that commands attention.

Some brief history:
The Kirstein Business Library has a storied history dating back to May 7, 1930, when it first opened its doors. What makes this institution particularly special is its origin story—it was the first public business library in the United States built as a gift from a businessman, Louis Kirstein, who served as Vice President of Filene’s Department Store and as a Trustee of the Boston Public Library. Named in honor of Louis’ father, the Edward Kirstein Memorial Library was the second library in the country specifically designed as a public business library.
What it is today:
Within the KBLIC, the Thomas R. Drey, Jr. Investment Center offers specialized resources for those interested in making informed investment decisions. Named after a generous retired teacher who conducted investment research at Kirstein, this dedicated space provides up-to-date materials on wise investing strategies—further emphasizing the library’s commitment to comprehensive business education.
The KBLIC’s presence in Boston comes at a crucial time for small businesses and entrepreneurs. With rising costs everywhere you look, it is difficult for young entrepreneurs and small business owners to start working on their dreams, this helps make it a feasible reality.
What makes the KBLIC truly special is its evolution beyond traditional library services. The center serves as a coworking space, innovation hub, resource center and community gathering point—all nestled within one of America’s most historically significant public institutions.

The proximity to the NewsCafe in Prudential Center adds another layer of convenience for visitors, allowing them to grab a coffee while working on their next big idea. The live radio show broadcasts from nearby create an atmosphere of creativity and continuous dialogue that perfectly complements the center’s mission.
